EP18 Jess Herrington & Denise Thwaites
Tuesday Apr 20, 2021
Tuesday Apr 20, 2021
Jess Herrington & Denise Thwaites join us in the flats
Snapchat brought virtual and augmented reality to the palm of our hands, creating an accessible and simple user experience that resonated with the masses. This thrust digital artists and creators into the forefront of an evolving medium and offered a new way to interact with audiences. With technology and platforms ever changing it offers artist limitless possibilities with what’s next. Join us in unpacking the NFT fad with Jess and Denise.
We’ll be chatting to digital artist and facefilter expert Jess Herrington. This discipline requires the ability to straddle a complicated line of science, technology and art so it’s no surprise Jess is also a PhD neuroscience candidate. Jess has worked for clients including Instagram, Adobe and Sephora, as well as shows at the NGA, NPG, Art Not Apart and Sancho’s Dirty Laundry.
Denise Thwaites also works closely in the digital art world as a curator and researchers with the University of Canberra. She is the co-founder of Blocumenta, an organisation which since 2018 has been experimenting with how art fits on the blockchain and exploring decentralised technologies. Denise is the go to expert on NFT in Canberra so can’t wait to learn more about the acronym that is confusing everyone.

EP17 E.L.K & BYRD
Tuesday Apr 13, 2021
Tuesday Apr 13, 2021
E.L.K & Byrd join us in the flats.
Never far from controversy E.L.K’s recent exhibition at the Ambush Gallery drew praise and criticism when a number of works were removed after public pressure. Now he’s back in town working on a large-scale mural for the next 3 weeks. Early on he cut his teeth as a sign writer before eventually picking up the scalpel, over the last decade he has cemented himself as one of Australia’s greatest stencil artists. His work is known for this intricate detail and his ability to push the limits with what can be done with the medium. Some of his works use over 100 layers to bring out powerful images which often feature themes of war, religion and politics. He was the first street artist to have work accepted into the Archibald Prize and been shown in exhibitions around the world. Traveling to war ravaged corners of the globe teaching and creating, he has made it his mission to give back where he can.
Byrd has well and truly made his mark on Canberra from bombing the streets to being displayed in the National Gallery. His work has become part of the city landscape at local shops and community spaces everywhere. During festivals and exhibitions his work can also take on the 3D form using recycled boxes to create dystopian car wrecks and sculptures.
For decades these two artists have helped brighten up some of the city's darkest parts and help give communities an identity and a sense of place.

Jack Biilmann & Matt Barnes join us in the flats.
Blues & Roots legend Jack Biilmann is back with a national tour kicking off this month, swinging the axe all around the country but first he’s stopping by the flats.
His masterful ability with the 6 string earned him a Gibson official player partnership, support shows with the country’s best in the genre and a huge fanbase. His 3rd solo record Full Circle sees Biilmann in his true element of blues/roots but also wanders into the folk, soul, Americana and soul genres
The influences of the South Coast and Snowy region are strong in his music not just from the land but also the people.
Music engineer and close mate Matt Barnes is one of those people. Working all over the world producing music and learning from the best in the industry. SAFIA’s visuals have always had the ability to capture the imagination of fans and draw them deeper into the music and Crux Media has been crucial in creating that unique SAFIA universe from the start. EP13 Neko Pink
Thursday Feb 04, 2021
Thursday Feb 04, 2021
Neko Pink join us in the flats.
Angus McAndrew & Africa Mylchreest are in to talk making music in Canberra, new projects, upcoming gigs with Touch Sensitive and more.
In 2017 Gus approached Africa for a feature on his solo project, soon after Neko Pink was born. Roughly 1 year later that song topped Triple J Unearthed pop charts. Break out single Black Mountain Drive lead to their first EP Love Capital, which very much reflects their experiences in the city they come from.
In 2018 they were in the Top 20 most visited pages on Unearthed. Since then they have supported All Day, Lime Cordiale, Boo Seeka, Northeast Party House and many local festival sets. Pleaty to discuss with the Love Capital icons Neko Pink.

EP12 YNG Martyr & Samuel Gordon
Thursday Jan 21, 2021
Thursday Jan 21, 2021
YNG Martyr & Samuel Gordon join us in the flats.
Canberra’s most streamed artist YNG Martyr has clearly been killing the numbers game but is backing it up with original and consistent bangers that have been resonating with a huge audience all over the world.
30million+ streams on break out track Nike Ticks, 1.4million Spotify monthly listeners, 3million+ views on Worldstar Hip Hop, YNG Martyr is breaking the mold of how music is released and distributed. Martyr & YNG Marketing have pioneered a new way of reaching an audience through meme and ‘guerilla’ distribution.
The Acclaim Magazine 2020 Song Of The Year winner is (in our opinion) Canberra’s hip hop MVP so keen to finally get him in the flats.
Close collaborator and friend Samuel Gordon joins us to talk about what they have in the works. He is one part of Lightline Productions, home to the new wave of photography, video and design content coming out of Canberra.

EP11 Hands Like Houses
Friday Jan 15, 2021
Friday Jan 15, 2021
Hands Like Houses talk origin stories, warped tours & bad deals.
Joel Tyrrell & Matt Cooper from Hands Like Houses join us in the flats.
Hands Like Houses would normally be on tour in Europe or navigating across the US with festivals like Vans Warped Tour but 2020 saw that all come to a halt. Restrictions meant they had to bunker down in Canberra, however that hasn't stopped them having a huge year. They have released an EP with stand out singles Space & Dangerous, become the sound of the NRL and AFL grand final series, had a smash Triple J Like A Version, innovated with live stream shows and formed the Housos Community.
HLH have been reppin the capital region hard during lock down so it’s only right that we check in with the lads. Talking music videos, racking up over 600k streams a month, work with MusicACT and their 2 ARIA Top 10 albums.
Tonight was meant to be the start of their Australian tour, unfortunately COVID had other ideas but it’s meant we’ve had time to catch up with Joel Tyrrell (Bass) & Matt Cooper (Lead Guitar) from the band in the flats.

Faith Kerehona & Sancho Murphy on the Mustard Flats Podcast EP10
Sancho Murphy is the founder of the Chop Shop art space which was born during the Braddon revolution which saw food trucks and pop shops change the landscape of Lonsdale St. After launching bars and galleries south of Cooyong (SoCo) Sancho is back in Braddon. The Dirty Laundry is a home base to Canberra’s underground arts and still supporting and showcasing the best artists that Canberra has to offer.
Chop Shop alumni Faith Kerehona had her first show at the warehouse venue in 2014. Since then she has developed a mixed format style of street art, photography, video and painting which can be seen all around Canberra’s public spaces and galleries. Recently speaking at TedX and featured in the HERE I AM exhibition, join us in the flats for episode 10.
